The FCT EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY Has charged residents of Abuja Municipal Area Council to ensure inclusivity in disaster risk reduction efforts

The Director, Forecasting, Response and Mitigation Lady Florence Dawon Wenegieme made the call at Sa Peyi Palace, Garki.

Lady Wenegieme who led a team of FEMA staff to the palace reflected on the theme of IDDRR 2023 which is Fighting Inequality for a Resilient Future for all, and made a case for the inclusion of the vulnerable in the society during emergency response.

“Previous years the themes centered on infrastructure, economic loses, governance and others, but this year the UN General Assembly chose to drive the narrative on fighting inequality in the sense of how it affects human beings”.

She further stated that “it has to do with total inclusiveness of all human beings, people living with disabilities; the aged, women and children, pregnant women, the poor, when there is a disaster, we must look out for the most vulnerable first”.

The Director lamented that during emergencies, people seem to overlook those who cannot help themselves and this results to disasters.

“Not when there is a disaster you focus your attention on people who can run, no, what the them is reeling us is that we should break that circle, which is the harsh tag for the 2023 IDDRR. When there is a disaster, you look out for the most vulnerable.”

You will recall that the FCT Emergency Management Agency began sensitization in the Six Area Councils to mark the 2023 International Day For Disaster Risk Reduction on Wednesday at Abaji and moved to Gwagwalada on Thursday before the visit to AMAC today.
