The FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has vowed to sustain the removal of structures obstructing free flow of water in the Territory.
The Director General of FEMA, Alhaji Abbas Idriss started this at an event to mark the 2022 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, (IDDRR), in Abuja. Nothing that over 250 houses were removed in Lokogoma District and Trademore Estate, Idriss said this is the only way we can fight the negativity of climate change. He described the theme of the 2022 IDDRR,” Early warning, early action” as apt, stressing the need for a bottom up strategy. ” We must educate our locals on early warning, to give them support and nip in the bud all these things causing disasters in their community; where we have floods washing away villages and towns”.
The DG noted that it is easier to mitigate at the urban levels than at the local levels.According to him, ” we cascade early warning to the grassroots using local divers , vanguards and town criers. As soon as we get the early warning we swing into action.
To ensure inclusivity of persons living with disasbilities in disaster risk reduction, we are collaborating with two nongovernmental organizations; Survive Fistula Health Foundation and the Christian Blind Mission.
Earlier, Acting Director Forecasting ,Response and Mitigation, Mrs Florence Wenegieme attributed the drastic reduction in death records emanating from disasters in the territory to sustained public enlightenment by the agency.
Speaking in Abuja, during a road walk to sensitise FCT residents on the importance of disaster risk reduction, Wenegieme emphasised the need for all levels of government to create more awareness and empower emergency management bodies to carry out adequate sensitisation on the risk factors associated with disaster.
According to her, ” Because of the aggressive sensitisation, the FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) had been carrying out in the territory, if you look at the statistics starting from 2014 to date the number of death record has drastically reduced in FCT”
“And this year in particular we didn’t record any death and it is because of the aggressive sensitisation the agency conducted from the grassroots to the Federal Capital City city”.
” We have used the Town criers, Local divers, volunteers, vanguards, religious leaders, Head of Communities, Women Leaders, and all that”.
” And this year we have decided to include People with Disabilities and that is why we call it disability inclusiveness in disaster risk reduction. People that have different disabilities we are carrying them along.”
