The Director-General, Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Alh. Idriss Abass wants residents of the Territory to educate their children on the use of electrical appliances this dry season to curtail fire outbreaks.
He gave the advice while fielding questions on a Radio Programme in Abuja. https://fb.watch/9Ehcnh_6Bz/
A statement issued by the Agency quotes the DG as saying that, “This is harmattan and we normally experience fire outbreak because people make use of fire and electricity more often than before, we realize that there is always an outbreak of fire due to negligence”.
He noted that children are prone to leaving appliances such as pressing irons on, long after they must have finished using it, which turns out to burn the laying surface and ignite a fire.
“We should make sure we educate our children to know when and when not to use electrical appliances”. He said
Alhaji Idriss also decried the lack of fire fighting equipment in most homes,
“There is absence of fire extinguishers and the available ones are non-serviceable, no smoke detectors and fire blankets, gas cylinders are reckless”. He said.
He emphasized the need for parents to take emergency preparedness seriously in view of rising cases of domestic fire incidences which have led to the loss of lives and destruction of properties worth millions of naira.
The FEMA boss urged residents of the FCT to call the emergency toll-free number 112 in case of any emergency as this will activate emergency responders to any disaster scene.
