FEMA PROFERS FLOOD SOLUTIONS IN THE FCT
September 13, 2021
The FCT Emergency Management Agency had devised different strategies to reduce and check flooding and its effects on the lives and property of the FCT citizens. The Director-General FEMA, Alh Abbas Idriss made this known in an interview recently.
“We are working seriously with our stakeholders, especially the Urban & Regional Planning, Development Control, and other agencies to make sure they take care of any infraction that could lead to a flood. This is why you see demolitions going on in the FCT; this is to ensure that no waterway is blocked”
“Everybody is a stakeholder in this, we must be able to own up and take care of our environment and protect it,” he said.
Alh. Idriss urged FCT citizens to desist from encroaching into green areas and waterways to prevent flooding. He also identified that dumping of refuse into drainages could lead to flash floods as flash flooding is a more dangerous type of flooding because it builds up within seconds.
The FEMA Boss disclosed that the agency is heavily invested in sensitization of the public. One of the ways the agency has done this is to make use of community town criers to help spread awareness in the languages of their community.
Alh Idriss notified that flood casualties are often elites and it is a result of the negligence of warnings. He advised that citizens of the FCT should adhere to instructions given to preserving life and property.
