Emergency Response Floods Natural Disasters

September 3, 2021

The Director-General, FCT Emergency Management Agency, Alh. Idriss ABASS has emphasized the importance of town criers, local divers, and vanguards in effectively tackling and preventing flood disasters in the FCT.

He made this known at the recently concluded 2021 Annual Flood Review and Preparedness Meeting with the Agency’s Stakeholders at the Area Council and Community Level in Abuja.
According to him, FEMA at the community level had to make greater use of town criers, in addition to electronic media, to carry out flood sensitization and awareness campaign, especially in remote communities.
He said the effectiveness of town criers, local divers, and vanguards in the process of flood disaster management has justified their inclusion in the forum.
“The local divers are very critical in our operations because they are the first respondents when a flood disaster happens, we need to sensitize and educate them on the modern ways of dealing with rescue operations,” he said.
He further assured that FEMA is committed to training and retraining divers, community vanguards, and town criers, and also provides modern operational gear to boost their capacity as first respondents in various communities.
He said it is equally important to state here that at the Area Council level, Local Emergency Management Committees are saddled with the responsibility of implementing Disaster Risk Reduction Programmes (DRRP), including Flood Prevention, Mitigation, and Response at the grassroots”.

The Acting Director, Forecasting, Response and Mitigation (FRM), Mrs. Florence Wenegieme emphasized the importance of the program adding that this would help to ensure that the residents of FCT live in a safe environment.

“This year, we have added the Local Emergency Management Committee along with the town criers to reiterate the importance of community involvement in emergency management in the FCT”. She said.

Mrs. Wenegieme whose department hosted the event encouraged the local divers to keep up with the good work and to do everything within their power to ensure that lives are saved in an emergency situation.

The highlight of the event was the demonstration of the effective use of safety gear during rescue missions and a professional approach to emergency rescue situations.
